Puppies Rescued!

On August 14, 2007, Pups1the Caroline County Humane Society, located on Maryland’s eastern shore, received a call from a concerned citizen. The anonymous caller reported many dogs being kept in deplorable conditions. When the Animal Control Officers arrived, they found approximately 20 American Pit Bull Terriers, 12 of which were puppies.

A truck cap was sitting on the ground. They could hear Pups2puppies crying, but there was no way for the pups to escape. Essentially entombed under this cap, in the blazing heat, were 10 puppies, approximately 5-6 weeks old. In a nearby kennel, they found two tiny two week old puppies. One was stuck in the wire of the fence, near death. The other was trapped behind some boards. In with them was a thin momma who actually turned out to be the mother of the puppies under the cap. While the conditions of most of the adult dogs met with “minimum standards”, the same was not true of the puppies and one adult dog.

The ACOs began removing all of the puppies and the mom dog from the site, with the help of county deputies. The 10 puppies under the cap were in bad shape. They were thin, dehydrated, weak…and VERY happy to see the ACOs! They were transported back to the shelter where they were immediately vaccinated, wormed, and given a huge warm meal. Apparently not having had sufficient food, they ate so much they ended up looking like little Buddha puppies. They were reunited with their mom, and the two week old puppies were started on bottle feedings around the clock.

When the time came Pups3that the puppies were able to leave the shelter, the Caroline County Humane Society sent out a plea to Roxie’s Fund that could and would help these babies! It was a matter of life and death, as the shelter was at capacity, and was desperate to insure these puppies and momma dog had a truly happy ending.

The mommy is in foster care with one of the Roxie’s Fund and Shelter Volunteer. The rest of the puppies have been sent to foster homes with various organizations. All the pups have finally received all the Veterinary care they desperately needed. Any financial assistance is greatly appreciated for the care of all of the puppies and the mommy. The entire litter along with mommy are available for adoption and can all be seen on our website.
